You may have noticed changes to how Control IDs are assigned. This post explains why these changes were necessary and how Control ID numbers are now assigned.
We are developing a mobile app to simplify lost and found even more for our partners. As part of the new functionality, it was necessary to synchronize the Control ID and Repository ID.
The Control ID previously had a specific format, for example, 23A00001. The first two digits and the letter represented the year and month an item was added. The last five digits were assigned serially and were reset at the beginning of each month.
With this change, the Control ID will have a similar format, for example, 23A8599652. The first two digits and the letter still represent the year and month an item is added. The last seven digits are the unique Repository ID for the item.
When viewed in your repository list, these digits will not be in a consecutive sequential order. However, they are unique and are assigned in ascending order.
If you have been storing found items in order based on the Control ID, this can still be done by referencing the last four or five digits of the Control ID. Although the numbers are not sequential, i.e. 000001, 000002, 000003, etc., they are continuous and in ascending order.
